Kafa Biosphere Reserve

Discover the Kafa Biosphere Reserve - Ethiopia's inaugural haven for biodiversity and coffee enthusiasts!

Nestled within the Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity Hotspot, the Kafa Biosphere Reserve is a prime example of Ethiopia's dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable practices. This exceptional reserve serves as a sanctuary for ethereal cloud forests, despite the threats from deforestation and extensive commercial land clearance that these majestic woodlands face. To protect these unique ecosystems, the Kafa Biosphere Reserve has embraced Participatory Forest Management (PFM), an approach that promotes forest conservation and sustainable gathering of wild, organic products from the natural forest areas.

At the heart of the Kafa Biosphere Reserve lies the birthplace of wild Arabica coffee, a treasured gem revered by coffee enthusiasts worldwide. The reserve's nurturing environment also fosters a wealth of valuable spices, bee products, fruits, and vegetables, reflecting the rich biodiversity thriving within its boundaries. Traditional agricultural practices hold great significance here, and the slow integration of PFM into markets beyond coffee calls for urgent action to expand and diversify farming opportunities for local communities.

The livelihoods of these communities are intricately tied to the success of such initiatives, and the flourishing health of the forests and their precious biodiversity hinges on their effective implementation. Through collaborative efforts, we strive to safeguard the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, ensuring that future generations can continue to savor the wonders of nature and the exceptional flavors of wild Arabica coffee amongst other native and endemic plant species.

Join us on this journey of preservation and building with sustainability at the core, and together, let us create a harmonious coexistence between humans and the natural world within the Kafa Biosphere Reserve.

Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve

The Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve, situated within the Southwest Highlands Forests of Ethiopia, holds immense significance in conserving Afromontane forest vegetation, including the vulnerable Afromontane Rainforest and Alpine Bamboo thickets. For the Shekacho community, the forest serves as a lifeline, providing income, shelter, and medicinal resources passed down from generation to generation. Embracing ecologically sustainable practices, the community demonstrates profound commitment to preserving the integrity of this pristine and delicate ecosystem.

The primary attraction of the biosphere reserve is the Sheka Rainforest, a vast expanse of tropical forest with diverse flora and fauna. Exploring the rainforest on guided hikes allows visitors to witness its incredible biodiversity and experience the beauty of untouched nature. The Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve is also home to several beautiful waterfalls, such as the Bechacha Waterfall, where visitors can enjoy the refreshing spray and picturesque scenery.

Overall, the Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve stands as a true sanctuary of nature, where the vibrant traditions of the Shekacho community seamlessly integrate with the preservation of the rich ecological heritage. Visitors have the unique opportunity to witness the harmonious coexistence of culture and nature, making it an exceptional destination for ecotourism and sustainable exploration.

Through our work, we hope that Chakka Origins can be one of the many enterprises working in collaboration with these remotely located farming communities, to ensure they have market access and are better capacitated to continue safeguarding the ecosystems their livelihoods depend on.

Greater Gurage

Welcome to Greater Gurage - a diverse and vibrant region in Ethiopia's Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region!

Gurage, nestled in the western part of central Ethiopia, holds a significant population density, thriving with some of the most productive agriculture, particularly including the infamous Enset (or false banana) cultivation. This is also one of the areas where Eucalyptus tree species were introduced into Ethiopia, to meet the rising demand for fuelwood and construction materials amid escalating deforestation. Despite the economic factors driving the expansion of Eucalyptus plantations in the area, for the sustainability of soil and biodiversity, Eucalyptus has been damaging. This is why Chakka Origins is committed to increasing permaculture practices and eventually reforestation in Greater Gurage.

In addition to its agricultural significance, Greater Gurage also boasts cultural treasures, including the renowned Tiya Archaeological Site. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tiya holds profound historical importance as an ancient archaeological complex. Dating back to the 12th century, the site is adorned with a collection of enigmatic stelae, stone markers that have puzzled researchers and visitors alike with their intricate carvings and symbols. These towering pillars have sparked debates about the civilization that created them, adding to Tiya's allure. For those seeking to immerse themselves in Ethiopia's rich history and unravel the secrets of its ancient past, Tiya remains a captivating destination.

Greater Gurage stands as a thriving hub of agricultural activities, where communities embrace sustainable practices to preserve their natural heritage and access economic prosperity. With its combination of agricultural bounty and cultural treasures, the zone offers a diverse and captivating experience for visitors and researchers alike.
